Gordon W. Newell, Ph.D.

Dr. Newell received his B.A. in Chemistry and M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. After completing his graduate studies and a post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Newell joined Stanford Research Institute as Senior Biochemist. During the next 28 years, he directed the development of one of the first toxicology departments in the United States. Dr. Newell has held numerous administrative research positions and has directed chemical and environmental research programs in the toxicology of food additives, industrial chemicals, drugs, and pesticides. He has also designed and accredited laboratory research facilities.
Dr. Newell served as Associate Executive Director for the Board of Toxicology and Environmental Health Hazards of the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences. He later was Senior Program Manager for Health Studies at the Electric Power Research Institute.
Dr. Newell has authored more than 85 technical publications and papers, plus several hundred client-confidential reports. He has been a speaker and participant for numerous national and international scientific meetings, and has served as a member and Chair of many scientific advisory and review committees. He is a charter member of the Society of Toxicology and was the organizing chair and first President of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Toxicology. He is past President of the American College of Toxicology and the Environmental Mutagen Society, and a member of the organizing committee for the Society for Risk Analysis. Dr. Newell is a Fellow and former President of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, an honorary society with which he has been affiliated since 1981.
